Climate

In Cancun, located just north of the Riviera Maya, in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo, the climate is tropical, with a muggy and rainy season from May to October, and a cooler season, and also relatively dry, from November to April. However, also in the latter season, rainfall may occur, in addition to wind and cloudiness, especially in December and January. The average temperature ranges from 24 °C (75 °F) in January, to 29 °C (84 °F) in the period from June to August.

The dry season, from November to April, is warm, with pleasant temperatures, and a warm sea in which you can swim. However, in November hurricanes and tropical storms can still pass (see below), while from late November to early March the wind from the north, called el Norte, can blow, bringing cool and windy days. The rainy season, from May to October, is hot and above all humid. The breeze tempers a bit the heat, but moisture is very high. There's no shortage of sunshine, because the rains occur mainly in the form of showers or thunderstorms, short but intense. 

The best time to visit Cancun runs from mid-March to late May, being a warm period, relatively dry and with frequent sunshine. In April, a bit of sultriness begins to be felt, and in May the first thunderstorms can occur. In winter, from December to mid-March, you may very well find a warm and sunny week, but at other times there may be a few days with wind, clouds and some rain. Until March, when the Norte can blow, it can be cool at night, so it's better to bring a sweatshirt for the evening.

CAR
Visitors wishing to benefit from the flexibility of driving their own car are able to do so via one of the many car rental agencies located around Cancun, and at the airport. However, it is fairly common for the police to target tourists, often escalating to a frustrating situation.

TAXI
Being a highly touristy area, it is fairly easy to hail a cab in Cancun. Rates here work according to geographical zones, so driver are able to give you an accurate price straight away according to the zone your destination is located in. An interesting point to note is that it is more expensive for tourists to get a taxi from their hotel reception. Instead, walk a few meters and hail a taxi down the road, saving you the hotel’s cut on the price.

BUS
With an unbeatable price and a service running 24 hours a day, seven days a week, buses are a great and budget-friendly way to make your way around and beyond the peninsula. A ride along the Cancun strip is at a flat rate of 8.5 pesos, rising to 11 pesos if you choose to travel in one of Bus One’s air-conditioned buses. SImply flag down the driver to get on, and press the stop button to get off.

BIKE
Guests are often able to rent a bike from their accommodation of choice, however, locks are not always provided, making it a bit tricky to leave your bike anywhere, should you wish to explore on foot.

FERRY
You can access Isla Mujeres via the daily ferries leaving from Punta Sam (accommodates bikes and cars, 82 to 342 pesos), Puerto Juarez (35 pesos each way), and Gran Puerto (70 pesos each way).
