Where to go after dark in Trinidad & Tobago
Night owls will enjoy the selection of bars and nightclubs available in the country, and which can mostly be found on Trinidad's Port of Spain, where it isn't unusual to stumble upon an impromptu street party gathering around a soca, calypso, or steel pan band.
Visitors will find the capital's vibrant night scene along the Ariapita Avenue, locally called the Ave, and which is home to many of the Port of Spain’s top restaurants, bars and clubs.
However, the best way to experience the Trinbagonian festive spirit is to take part in the country's world-renowned Carnival celebrations, reputed to be the Caribbean's most exciting party! So if you happen to be visiting Trinidad and Tobago between Christmas and Ash Wednesday, one thing for sure is that you're in for one hell of a party treat!
LIFE IS A PARTY AND EVERYONE IS INVITED
In Trinidad and Tobago there are only two seasons which really matter: Carnival, and Getting Ready for Carnival! Carnival usually takes place in February, but the celebrations begin on December 26 each year, with various competitions for best costumes and music, and it's not until the Tuesday of Carnival that the parties and celebrations slow down.
This is the biggest party in the Caribbean, and in Trinidad and Tobago, everyone is invited- so join in! There are organised bands that march in Carnival sponsor 'mas' camps (short for masquerade) at numerous venues in and around the busy capital, and visitors from around the world are invited to experience the heart-pounding rhythms and jaw-dropping costumes by joining the parade, known locally as “playing mas.”
The melting-pot culture of Trinidad and Tobago is also home to other festivals, including the Hindu celebrations of Divali, the festivals of lights, Holi and Phagwa, as well as Emancipation Day, Arrival Day, Shouter Baptist Liberation Day, the Muslim holidays Hosay and Eid-Ul-Fitr, and many more…. Any excuse for a celebration and there is a party to be found!
BARS
Trinidad and Tobago bars have some of the best happy hours around; two for ones, free tasters or special prices, there isn’t much of an excuse not to start your evening off at happy hour! Most of the islands' bars as within a restaurant setup, or at the very least serve some element of food, so you can easily have a quick bite before or as you start on those drinks.
DANCE CLUBS
You can't ignore the Caribbean rhythm, and if you feel like working off some energy with your moves, head to one of the country's nightclubs instead of a bar, such as Katalyst in Woodbrook, or Zen Night Club in Port of Spain.
OTHER ENTERTAINMENT
If you prefer not to head to a bar or a club on your nights here, then there are plenty of other options! Family fun can be had on a mini-golf course such as Bedrock Mini Golf and Game Center in Port of Spain, places just for dinner, karaoke clubs, and annual events and festivals can all be enjoyed without the noise or the cocktails. Other options include pool halls, live theatres, and classical music concerts. If you're interested in seeing a movie during your vacation, there are two cinemas on Tobago.
