Climate
The archipelago of the Bahamas is stretched along a northwest-southeast axis: the northernmost islands are located to the east of Florida, while the southernmost ones are located to the northwest of Haiti. The climate is subtropical in the north, and fully tropical in the south, with a hotter and rainy season from late April to early November. The trade winds temper the heat in the summer months. Proceeding from north-west to south-east, there's an increase in the winter temperatures and a decrease in the summer precipitation: this means that the north-western islands (Grand Bahama, Little Abaco, Andros and New Providence, where the capital Nassau is located) are cooler in winter and rainier in summer.
The best time to visit The Bahamas is the dry season, from late November to mid-April. However, in the north-western islands, from December to March the temperature is often not high enough for a beach holiday, and sometimes there are also some cool and windy days. In the southernmost islands, however, and in particular in Inagua and Great Inagua, winter is warm enough to enjoy the sun and the sea, while in the northernmost islands you may prefer April (the best) and May (still good but with the first summer rains). In the rainy season, the heat is sweltering, and thunderstorms can be intense, even though the sun is still frequent. If you want to choose the summer, the month of July will be preferable, because there's a relative break in the rains (though not in Nassau and in the westernmost islands), and because hurricanes are less likely than in August.
Getting Here
Nassau Airport in New Providence (NAS) for international flights
Freeport Airport in Grand Bahama (FPO) for international flights
Both airport also do domestic flight to other smaller airports dotted around the country’s other islands
The country is an all-time favourite stop for Caribbean cruises, with Nassau being one of the busiest cruise ship ports in the world.
Good to know
Most of the country’s islands have their own airport, enabling visitors to travel easily and quickly, with regular schedules serving the majority of the islands. Taxi services in the Bahamas can be very expensive, with rates that are non-negotiable.
Although car rental in the Bahamas is more expensive than in other countries, it is still a slightly more budget-friendly way to keep your independence whilst in the country. Whilst you will easily find car rental agencies available at the international airports of Nassau and Freeport, such service is not as widely spread on the other islands
The cheapest way to travel around the country’s various islands is to take one of the mail boats which, despite lacking in comfort and speed, are the most budget-friendly solution you will find. But if money is not an issue, you will find plenty of yacht charter services to take you to your destination in no time, and in the comfort of a luxurious boat.
History of the bahamas
Even the most experienced explorers have gotten lost in the abundant natural beauty of The Bahamas. For centuries, our islands have captivated settlers, traders and invaders, while our shipping channel enchanted pirates who quickly discovered all of the great hiding places offered by the Bahama Islands. To this day, there are still tales of treasure. However, the real treasure is the people here; with an attitude of living for day, the past is never forgotten.
